With the biggest youth climate rally of the summer fast approaching on August 6th, Sunrise Westchester gathered at a soccer field in Valhalla for an important protest preparation: sign-making.
Environmental rallies are iconic for their colorful, profound, and sometimes witty signage. While they might seem trivial, banners and signs are important to make visual statements at protests一they are a key tool for capturing public and media attention.
Seven Sunrise Westchester members spent two hours on Tuesday, July 27th crafting these creative signs, even repurposing sustainably-conscious materials such as leftover pizza boxes as sign backings.
The purpose of the upcoming Albany protest is two-fold: (1) to demand the passage of more progressive environmental legislation (as the legislature has passed few climate bills recently, treating the 2019 CLCPA as a one-and-done action, while not providing a legitimate plan to achieve those ambitious goals) and (2) to urge the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System to divest from fossil fuels.
