"A Fantastic Win”: Sunrise Westchester Testimonies Help Deny Danskammer Air Permit

During the Danskammer air permit hearings this week, Sunrise Westchester provided key testimony in opposition.

This week, four virtual, public hearings were held to determine whether Danskammer receives a Title V air permit. This permit would enable commencing construction on an expansion. If you are unfamiliar with the Danskammer topic, Danskammer is a peaker plant in Newburgh, meaning it only operates periodically. However, there is a proposal for constructing a 550-Megawatt gas-fired plant adjacent to it, which would operate constantly. This obviously does not align with New York State’s ambitious climate goals as outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

Voicing our opposition of this permit to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was a critical action in the fight against Danskammer.

Caitlyn Carpenter, Sunrise Westchester Co-Coordinator, explained on Wednesday, “142 people spoke in opposition of Danskammer at the hearings while only 19 spoke out in support. This is a fantastic win for us.”
